WATCH Qantas’ new safety video if you want to feel all the feelings

Qantas, Australia’s national airline, has released a new safety video designed to make Aussie expats run home as soon as possible. I’m pretty sure that’s what’s happening here.

In all honesty, it’s a great video, showcasing some of the Australian landscape at it’s best. My favourite part was the life jacket demonstration at Bondi beach.

The video is a partnership between Tourism Australia and Qantas and has been designed to be shared.  It’s already had mentions on Mashable, Gizmodo and the Daily Mirror .  The video will screen on every flight and reach an audience of 30 million people.

But I have a question. Why is this video not as diverse as it could be? The landscape is diverse. But what about the people? We celebrate Multicultural Australia at home.  But when it comes to how we project ourselves to the world, we’re still overwhelmingly white.  Does anyone else have a problem with this video? Or is it just me?

  1. I think it is a problem too. Where are all the first generation Chinese, Indian Australians etc who speak perfect ‘Aussie English’ without broad cringe worthy Australian accents? The main thing about this video is that people understand the instructions. There was a time when Aussies received sub titles when they aired on shows in the USA. I hope those days are gone and Americans do understand every word without relying on subtitles. We don’t like appearing foreign to outsiders and maybe that is the message Qantas is trying to make! Gone are the days of telling the world we all put a shrimp on the barbie!
